What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Because of the direct correlation between diet and diabetes management, medical nutrition therapy (MNT) provided by a registered dietitian is a key complement to traditional medical interventions in diabetic treatment.
MNT is defined as “nutritional diagnostic, therapy, and counseling services for the purpose of disease management which are furnished by a registered dietitian or nutrition professional.”    The American Dietetic Association defines the nutrition counseling component of MNT as “as supportive process to set priorities, establish goals, and  create individualized action plans which acknowledge and foster responsibility for self-care.”
MNT is an important component of diabetes self-management.  The goals of medical nurtrition therapy for all people with diabetes are 1) to attain and maintain optimal metabolic outcomes, including blood glucose and A1C level. LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure and body weight; 2) to prevent and treat all diabetes complications;  3) to improve health through healthy food choices; and 4) to address individual nutritional needs, taking into account personal preferences, cultural preferences, lifestyle, and willingness to change (American Diabetes Association)
